Thousands vote for president but not Kanjorski Print E-mail
HAZLETON – Vince Galko, campaign manager for U.S. Congressional candidate Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta, issued the following statement in wake of Tuesday’s unofficial primary election results:

“Tonight, thousands of Democrats told Paul Kanjorski that his 24 years inside of the Washington, D.C., beltway are more than enough for them.

“If the election returns are accurate, it appears that thousands of Democratic voters went out of their way not to vote for Paul Kanjorski. People want change in Washington and they want leadership and results from their elected officials. The fact that so many voters chose not to vote for the incumbent congressman is a very good indication that Lou Barletta is in an excellent position to win in November.

“A certain amount of dropoff or ballot fatigue is to be expected, but Paul Kanjorski was the second office listed on the ballot and he was very visible in his support for Senator Hillary Clinton throughout this primary election. It is simply astonishing that he was rejected by so many voters in his own party across the 11th Congressional District.”

One small example: In nine polling locations in the Nanticoke area – Kanjorski’s home base – unofficial results show that of 3,423 Democratic voters who went to the polls, more than 1,200 chose not to vote for Paul Kanjorski. Lou Barletta received 118 write-in votes in that same area.

In Paul Kanjorski’s home ward (Nanticoke Ward 2), unofficial results showed that 411 Democrats voted – but almost 40 percent did not vote for the incumbent congressman. Lou Barletta received 44 write-in votes in Paul Kanjorski’s home ward – votes cast by the people who know the congressman best.
